Proper maintenance is the single most important factor in the longevity and reliability of any Jaguar Land Rover vehicle. JLR's modern engines, transmissions, and emissions systems are precision-engineered, but they are also sensitive to deferred service. Using the wrong oil, skipping inspections, or ignoring brake wear indicators leads to expensive failures that could have been prevented. This guide provides the official service schedules and maintenance intervals for the full JLR lineup, organised by model and engine type.

Understanding JLR Service Schedules

JLR uses a condition-based service (CBS) system on most modern vehicles. The vehicle monitors oil quality, brake pad wear, and filter life, and displays service reminders on the instrument cluster. However, the CBS system is a supplement, not a replacement, for time-based intervals. For vehicles operated in severe conditions — frequent short trips, towing, off-road use, or extreme temperatures — the time-based interval should be followed regardless of what the CBS display shows.

JLR defines two service schedules:

  • Standard Schedule: Normal driving conditions, moderate climates, highway commuting.
  • Severe Schedule: Short trips, stop-and-go traffic, towing, off-road, extreme temperatures, dusty environments.

When in doubt, follow the severe schedule. The additional cost of more frequent service is negligible compared to the cost of an engine rebuild or transmission replacement.

Oil Change Specifications by Engine

Ingenium 4-Cylinder Petrol (P300, P250)

  • Oil specification: ACEA C5, 0W-20 (Castrol Edge Professional OE 0W-20 or equivalent)
  • Capacity: 5.6 litres (with filter)
  • Standard interval: 16,000 km or 12 months
  • Severe interval: 8,000 km or 6 months

Ingenium 6-Cylinder Petrol (P400, P360)

  • Oil specification: ACEA C5, 0W-20
  • Capacity: 7.0 litres (with filter)
  • Standard interval: 16,000 km or 12 months
  • Severe interval: 8,000 km or 6 months

Ingenium 4-Cylinder Diesel (D200, D240, D300)

  • Oil specification: ACEA C3, 5W-30 (low-ash for DPF compatibility)
  • Capacity: 6.5 litres (with filter)
  • Standard interval: 16,000 km or 12 months
  • Severe interval: 8,000 km or 6 months

AJ-V8 5.0L Supercharged (P525, P565)

  • Oil specification: ACEA A1/B1, 5W-20 (Castrol Edge 5W-20 or equivalent)
  • Capacity: 8.0 litres (with filter)
  • Standard interval: 16,000 km or 12 months
  • Severe interval: 8,000 km or 6 months

2.0L AJ-V6 Turbo (older Jaguar models)

  • Oil specification: ACEA C2, 5W-30
  • Capacity: 5.5 litres (with filter)
  • Standard interval: 16,000 km or 12 months

Always use the exact oil specification listed in the owner's manual. Using a higher-viscosity oil than specified (e.g., 10W-40 in an engine requiring 0W-20) can cause VVT system faults, increased fuel consumption, and premature timing chain wear. Using non-low-ash oil in a diesel engine will clog the DPF.

Brake and Fluid Service

Brake Pad Wear Limits

  • Front pads: Replace at 3.0 mm remaining friction material
  • Rear pads: Replace at 3.0 mm remaining friction material
  • Disc minimum thickness: Refer to Topix Cloud for the specific model. Never machine a disc below minimum thickness.

Brake Fluid

  • Specification: DOT 4 low-viscosity (LV) fluid
  • Replacement interval: Every 2 years or 32,000 km, whichever comes first
  • Moisture limit: Replace if moisture content exceeds 3%

Coolant

  • Specification: JLR Premium Coolant (ethylene glycol-based, silicate-free)
  • Replacement interval: Every 5 years or 160,000 km
  • Concentration: 50/50 mix with distilled water. Do not use tap water.

Special Service Items

Timing Chain

JLR does not specify a timing chain replacement interval under normal conditions. However, on the Ingenium petrol engines, chain stretch is a known issue. If the vehicle exhibits cold-start rattle or stores P0016/P0017, inspect the chain and tensioner regardless of mileage.

AdBlue (Diesel Models)

  • Capacity: Approximately 17–20 litres depending on model
  • Consumption: Approximately 1.5–2.5 litres per 1,000 km
  • Refill: Top up at every Service A. The vehicle will enter limp mode if the AdBlue tank is empty and cannot be restarted after 50 km of warnings.

Transmission Service

  • ZF 8HP: Fluid and filter change every 80,000 km (normal) or 40,000 km (severe). See our ZF 8HP Transmission Faults Guide for full details.
  • Transfer case: Fluid change every 80,000 km or 6 years (4WD vehicles).
  • Differential: Fluid change every 80,000 km or 6 years. Use the specified oil grade — incorrect oil causes noise and premature wear.

Conclusion

Following the correct JLR service schedule is not just about keeping the warranty valid — it is about preventing catastrophic failures. A £150 oil change every 8,000 km on the severe schedule is far cheaper than a £5,000 engine rebuild. Use the correct oil specification, replace fluids on time, and never ignore the CBS warnings. For workshops, having this schedule printed and displayed in the service bay helps technicians catch deferred maintenance before it becomes a major repair.

FAQ

Can I use aftermarket oil in my JLR?
Only if it meets the exact ACEA specification listed in the manual. Using the wrong oil causes warranty issues and can damage the engine, DPF, or VVT system. When in doubt, use the Castrol Edge Professional grade specified by JLR.
What happens if I miss a service interval?
The CBS system will display a warning. Continued driving with degraded oil increases engine wear, DPF clogging (diesel), and timing chain stretch. Extended oil change intervals are a leading cause of Ingenium engine failures.
How do I reset the service reminder?
The service reminder can be reset via the instrument cluster menu on some models, or via Pathfinder/SDD under Service Functions > Reset Service Interval. For MY2017+ vehicles, use Pathfinder with the JLR DOIP VCI.
Do electric JLR vehicles require different maintenance?
Yes. Electric vehicles (e.g., Range Rover Electric, Jaguar I-Pace) do not require oil changes, spark plugs, or DPF service. However, they still require brake fluid changes, coolant changes, tyre rotations, and cabin filter replacements. The high-voltage system requires specialist training and insulated tools.
Can I perform a major service without a diagnostic tool?
No. Many modern JLR vehicles require a diagnostic scan to reset service counters, calibrate systems, and verify module health after a major service. The JLR DOIP VCI with Pathfinder is the minimum requirement for post-service verification.
